The flow of hot water from a naturally flowing stream is a wonderful charisma of nature. Hot water flows naturally in Sindhupalchok, Mustang, Myagdi and other places in Nepal. Which is known as Tatopani "Tatopani". In this way, people go to bathe in the naturally flowing hot water every year. Health experts say that various types of skin diseases can be cured by bathing in such water.

Tatopani Hot Spring

Tatopani is located at a distance of about 111 km from Kathmandu to the north, near the Tibet border, Sindhupalchowk. It can be assumed that this place is named Tatopani because there is a natural stream of hot water. From this stream, the distance to Tibet is very close. Even though the hot water comes from natural sources in twelve months, especially in the months of Kartik and Chaitra, fairs are held here for bathing. 44 degree Celsius water keeps flowing from the hot springs of Sindhupalchok. It is a place full of natural beauty. A big idol of Lord Shiva has been built on the bank of Bhotekoshi near Tatopani. Every year, thousands of tourists with different faiths and beliefs come to bathe in the hot water. Therefore, Tatopani is a religious and touristic place.

Separate places have been arranged for men and women to bathe in the hot spring. Pilgrims from Kathmandu, Dolakha, Lalitpur, Nuwakot and other parts of the country go to "Tatopani Snan Mela" which is organized for bathing twice a year. Not only that, but this place has also garnered attention as a centre of attraction for foreign tourists. In the 1980s, domestic and foreign tourists started arriving in Tatopani. Before that, only locals used to bathe here. Many hotels and lodges are operating in this area. Those hotels provide food and accommodation facilities to the tourists who come here.

Tatopani is famous for its naturally flowing hot water streams. Besides, Tatopani is also famous for connecting Nepal and China commercially, strategically, and in friendly ways.

Faiths & Beliefs

Tatopani is a religious and tourist place. Historically, it is also interpreted as a sacred religious place. Bathing in hot water is believed to benefit patients with rheumatism. Similarly, people believe that bathing in this stream cures various skin problems. It can be heard from the devotees who come here that the problem of pain in different parts of the body can be cured by bathing in the hot stream.

According to health experts, such problems have been cured because the water flowing from the hot springs contains salts called sulfur. Because of this religious and scientific importance, many people come to bathe in the hot spring (Tatopani).

It was created during the Treta era to focus on the religious aspect. In the Treta Era, Sage Shringi was going to the Himalayas for penance. It is described in the scriptures that the same sage carved a "Trishul" at the place where the current hot water (Tatopani) stream is and that hot water came out from there.

Present Conditions

The number of tourists visiting Tatopani decreased due to reasons such as the 2072 earthquake, the Jure landslide, the Bhotekoshi flood, and the Corona epidemic. Now the number of domestic and foreign tourists is gradually increasing. Due to the lack of regular operation of the Tatopani crossing, the movement of traders in this area has also decreased. Local bodies are engaged in the construction of tourism infrastructure to bring tourists to Tatopani who come for Sukute, Bhotekoshi bungee, and rafting.

How to reach from Kathmandu?

Tatopani is 111 kilometres north of Kathmandu. Tatopani can be reached through the Araniko highway that connects Kathmandu to Tibet. There is a good road to Bahrabise. And, until here, there is not a very complicated path. After going up from Bahrabise, the road is very dangerous and scary. Tatopani can be reached through the road between the stones lying on the high hill and the Bhotekoshi river flowing downwards.

Tatopani Dry Port

Sindhupalchok Tatopani is also known as a trade channel connecting China and Nepal. China's Tibet and Nepal's Tatopani are the centres of import and export trade between the two countries. A dry port has also been constructed in Tatopani. Tatopani is a commercial centre where trade and commerce take place through the short-distance Araniko Highway that connects Nepal with China.
