Budhanilkantha Municipality is one of the municipalities among 11 local governments in the Kathmandu district. This municipality was made in 2071 BS by adjusting the former Chapali, Bhadrakali, Khadka Bhadrakali, Chunikhel, Mahakal, Bishnu Budhanilkhatha & Kapan village development committees. It had 19 ward offices. Later, During the state structure after the new constitution, i.e. during the implementation of federalism, based on the information published in the gazette by the Government of Nepal on the 27th of Falgun 2073, this municipality was adjusted in only 12 ward offices.
Budhanilkantha Municipality is named after lord Budhanilkantha (a form of Bishnu). Here is Nepal's largest stone idol, Which belongs to Budhanilkanth. This idol is lying on the ground. This municipality is the centre for religious faith & cultural heritages. Naturally, This has a stunning geographical location. This municipality is connected with Shivapuri National Park. So, many tourists are visiting this place. Located at the foothills of Shivpuri in the northern part, this place is the area of faith of Shaivas, Vaishnavas, and Buddhist religions. Budhanilkantha is one of the famous religious places in Nepal.
The eastern border of Budhanilkantha is connected with Gokarneshwor Municipality. Similarly, the western border is connected with Tokha Municipality. Nuwakot district is in the northern part of Budhanilkantha. And, the southern border is connected with Kathmandu Metro city. The north side of this municipality is covered with green forest including the Shivpuri mountain range. This municipality also has steep terrain, while on the south side, there is flat terrain and most of the terrain is covered by dense settlements.
There are 13 ward offices in Budhanilkantha Municipality. The total area of this municipality is 34.80 square kilometres. The geographical location of this Budhanilkanth municipality on the world map extends from 27 degrees 43 minutes 19 seconds north latitude to 27 degrees 48 minutes 50 seconds north latitude and 85 degrees 20 minutes 9 seconds east longitude to 85 degrees 23 minutes 28 seconds east longitude. The height of this municipality ranges from 1289 to 2699 meters above sea level.
Bishnumati, Rudramati, Dhobi Khola, Yagyamati etc are the major rivers in Budhanilkantha Municipality. The municipality building is located in ward no. 8, Hattigauda.
