The city has many temples, which are important for religious, historical, and cultural reasons.
There are many Hindu & Buddhist temples or stupas in Kathmandu. Kathmandu Valley includes Kathmandu, Lalitpur & Bhaktpur. Here, we are only explaining the temple located in the Kathmandu district.
Famous Temple of Kathmandu
Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, is a city of temples. There are faith centers of Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, and Christian religions. It is a museum of traditional history, art, and culture. The famous temples of Kathmandu are listed.
1. Pasupatinath Temple
Pashupatinath is the most sacred Hindu temple in the world. It is the temple of Lord Shiva, Mahadev. Geographically, this temple is located on the banks of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu. Thousands of pilgrims visit Pashupatinath temple. Many pilgrims come here during the Maha Shivaratri. This Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
2. Boudhanath Stupa
Boudhanath is one of the largest stupas in the world. It is in the Kathmandu district of Nepal. Boudhanath is the faith center of Buddhism in Nepal. It is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This stupa was built in the 14th century.
3. Swayambhunath (Money Temple)
Swayambhunath is one of the oldest heritages of Nepal. It is at least 1500 years old. This temple is also called "Money Temple". Swayambhu is in the northwest direction of Kathmandu. Moreover, It locates at the top of the hill. People can observe the entire Kathmandu valley from Swayambhu.
Swayambhu means self-originated. Furthermore, It is the faith centre of Hindus & Buddhists pilgrims. Additionally, Swayambhunath is a UNESCO World Heritage Site listed in 1979 AD.
4. Taleju Bhawani Temple/ Kumari Ghar
Taleju Bhawani is one of the historical heritages in Nepal. There are three Taleju Bhawani temples in Kathmandu Valley. Moreover, The royal palace of the Malla dynasty in Basantapur, Patan & Bhaktapur has a different Taleju Bhawani Temples. Furthermore, The Taleju Bhawani Temple of Basantapur is one of the main heritages in Nepal. This heritage is the home of Kumari " The Living Goddess". Additionally, King Mahendra Mall built the Basantapur Temple.
5. Dakshinkali Temple
Dakshinkali Temple is the most famous Hindu religious place in Kathmandu. It is located about 22 kilometres outside of Kathmandu city. Moreover, this temple is located in Pharping village of Dakshinkali Municipality. This temple is the form of the goddess Kali. It has more tourist attractions. Additionally, it is famous for its unique practice of animal sacrifices. Dakshinkali is an important pilgrim site of Nepalese.
6. Budhanilkantha Temple
Budhanilkantha is one of the popular Hindu temples. It is located at the base of Shivapuri Hill, Kathmandu. This temple is dedicated to Lord Bishnu. Moreover, this is the largest statue of lord Bishnu in Nepal. The statue is lying on the land. Additionally, This statue is about 1000 years old. Similarly. It is made of one single stone. It has about 5 meter length.
7. Chandragiri/ Bhaleshwor Temple
Chandragiri is one of the famous tourist area in Kathmandu. The Bhaleshwor Temple lies on the top of the Chandragiri hills. Moreover, it is the hindu temple in Kathmandu. You can reach via cablecar in just 15 minutes. Additionally, this is the most beautiful place. You can observe the 360 degree view of the Kathmandu valley. There is the snow falling during winter. The Bhaleshwor temple is dedicated to lord Shiva.
8. Guheshwori Temple
Guheshwori temple is one of the famous holy temple in Kathmandu, Nepal. It locates near to the Pasupatinath Temple. It is dedicated to goddess Adi Shakti. This is in the bank of Bagmati river. Moreover, it is the important religious place for Hindus. In 17th century, King Pratap Malla renovated this temple.
