Birth and Childhood

Senior folk singer Jay Nanda Lama was born on 1955, July 25 in Dharpa, Bahrabise Municipality-2, Sindhupalchok, Nepal. His father's and mother's names are not mentioned anywhere. Lama was called Jayananda when he was a child.
He had a passion for music since childhood. His father was also a singing/music lover. But because the family's financial situation was weak, his father used to go outside the house to earn income. Being born into a lama family, he used to go to the monastery to play various instruments at the lama's monastery while studying at a local school. He had said in a recent interview that if he was not a musician, he would have become a village lama. He was skilled from a young age and used to do all the work as fast as he could.
    On the whole, Jayananda Lama's childhood was spent in poverty, struggle, and effort.

Struggling journey in the Music/Singing field


Although he was fond of music at a young age, he and his family did not pay much attention to music due to a lack of finances in the family. He was intoxicated with music, all he needed was an opportunity. Golden opportunity!

During the Panchayat period, especially on the birthday of King Mahendra and on the day of Democracy Day, it was customary to select artists from all over the country. It was a custom to send experts to different regions of the country and select artists and bring them to Kathmandu. In that too, people who knew how to sing folk songs were given special preference.

Meanwhile, in 2026BS, Director Bhairav ​​Bahadur Thapa reached Bahrbise in the Sindhupalchok district. There he met Jayananda Lama. At that time, Lama was studying in class five. He was only 12 years old at that time. Director Bhairav ​​Bahadur Thapa was very impressed by Lama's love for folklore, voice, and music. After that, Lama was selected by the selection team in the folk singing category and brought to Kathmandu.

He himself told in an interview that when the selection team was in the village, Lama carried the burden of carrying their clothes.
After coming to Kathmandu, he sang folk songs on Radio Nepal. In that competition, he won 1000 rupees as a consolation prize and got a chance to record four more songs for Radio Nepal.

Education / Educational Qualification 


When he was studying in class five, he was selected in the folk singing category and came to Kathmandu. After that, he stayed in the palace as the musical guru of Prince Dipendra and others. He used to study at Padmodaya School while living in the palace. Today's famous artists Harivansh Acharya and Jayananda Lama used to study in the same class at Padmodaya School. Later, he completed his graduation in music (BA) from Lalitkala Campus through Srijan Fine Arts College.

After becoming a permanent employee of the Nepal Pragya Foundation in 2032 BS, the foundation sent him to Elawada Music School in India to study for a master's degree in music. Apart from this, practical learning and experience also helped him to improve in the field of art or music.

Occupation and Source of Income


He used to stay in the palace and teach music to Yuvaraj and others. He became a permanent employee of the Nepal Pragya Foundation in 2032. Apart from that, he used to teach M.Mus students at Tribhuvan University. He used to teach music in other schools like St. Mary, St. Xavier, etc.

For the last few decades, he was continuously engaged in the field of art and music. Embracing the field of art and music as a profession, he acted in many films and serials. He directed and made a film himself. He sang a lot of songs and became a judge on a musical reality show.

Family Details

Talking about his family, he has not disclosed much family information anywhere. According to information collected from various sources, Jay Nanda Lama was married to Gopi Lama. They have two sons and two daughters-in-law and grandchildren. Although he was born in Bahrabise in Sindhupalchok district, recently he was living in his own house in Bhaktapur Kaushaltar along with his wife, son and daughter-in-law.

Songs and Movies


He was a senior musician in Nepal. During his lifetime, he released about 19 music albums in his own words. Many of his songs like "Kalkate Kayo", "Chui Chui Chuikine", and "Mulako Chana" have been playing in the Nepali music market for a long time. Apart from this, he used the magic of his voice on the Tamang cello and Nepali folk songs.

He could not stay away from the field of artistry and continued to connect with the audience through many good films. He has acted in many films including Manko Bandha, Lakka Jawaan, Sanglo, Chakkapanja, Chakkapanja 2, Poi Paryo Kale, Maya Pirim, Dal Bhaat Tarka. Similarly, Kabaddi 4, and Chor Police are the last films in which he acted. Lately, he was acting in the comedy teleserial Halka Muzha. Part 120, which was mildly entertaining, became the last serial in which he acted.

That depth inspired him to write a book about music. He wrote two books, "Sangit Siddhanta" and "Nepali Music Alphabet", which were the first books written about Nepali music.
  • Lama was the inspiration for the Pingul script, that is, he has a special contribution to the study and research of the Pingul script.
  • Jayananda Lama was the first musician to develop and sell Nepali music albums as cassettes for the first time.
  • The writer and director of the first Tamang language movie "Chomri Chornan" were Lama, which was released in B.S. It was made in the year 2052 BS.
  • He spent about 25-30 years of his life studying, researching, and teaching music. After that, he spent time studying in the big libraries in Britain, America, and other countries.
  • Being impressed by Lama's voice, who participated as a member of the Bhairav ​​Nityal in a musical event held in Europe in 2030 BS, the then President Tito of Yugoslavia and the Queen of Belgium shook hands with him and had tea together.
  • Lama was the mentor of many artists and musicians. His mentor was director Bhairav ​​Bahadur Thapa.
  • Apart from music, artistry, directing, writing, studying, and research, he used to play all kinds of instruments very well. As his guru, Bhairav ​​Bahadur Thapa wrote in his memoirs, if he was given a new instrument to play, he could easily play that instrument within seven days.

Death

Death can neither turn nor move.
Jayananda Lama, a package/all-rounder of the Nepali entertainment industry, was found dead in the garage of his residence in Kaushaltar, Bhaktapur on the morning of 11/7/2078BS. He was returning home from work at around 1/2 o'clock in the night, after parking his car in the garage, when he got out of the car, his legs got tangled. His head hit the wall and he fell unconscious.
