Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower

Upper Tamokoshi Hydropower is the largest hydropower in Nepal. It is estimated 456 MW of hydroelectric potential. It is located in Bigu Rural Municipality, Lamabagar village, Dolakha. It is situated in the Tamakoshi River's watershed in the lowermost area of the Higher Himalayas. Tamakoshi is the major source of this hydropower. The hydroelectric plant's intake is situated at Lamabagar Village, which is directly 32 kilometres north-northeast of Charikot, the centre of the Dolakha District. The China border is around 6 km south of this hydropower plant. This hydropower has the largest capacity of hydroelectric and helps to contribute development of Nepal. It is a government-owned hydro project. The majority of shares are owned by government entities and a certain percentage of shares are owned by local & private sectors. 

 The largest ongoing project in Nepal is the Upper Tamakoshi Hydroelectric Project (UTKHEP), which is now in the implementation phase. The early commissioning of this national priority project is essential for resolving Nepal's long-term electricity shortage.  

Shareholders of the Upper Tamakoshi Hydro Project

The Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower project is majority-owned by government entities. Nepal Electricity Authority is the main shareholder of the project. The majority share is held by four public entities. That is: 

  • Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) - 41 % Shares
  • Nepal Telecom (NTC) - 6% Shares
  • Citizen Investment Trust (CIT) - 2% Shares 
  • Rastriya Beema Sansthan (RBS) - 2 % Shares 

The local has 10% shares of this project. Similarly, the general public has 15 % shares. The remaining 24% of shares will be taken over by contributors in the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), NEA & Company staff and staff of financial institutions providing loans.  All of the Project's funding for this project comes from local corporations and financial institutions.

 In the Tamakoshi River basin, the company has created and is currently building the hydropower projects listed below:
First Phase:  456 MW Upper Tamakoshi Hydroelectric Project (UTKHEP).
Phase Two:  Rolwaling River will be redirected to the UTKHEP intake pond.

Board of Directors of Upper Tamakoshi

 Currently, there are two invitee members and 10 full-time members on the Board of Directors (BoD) of Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower.  The Board of Directors is composed of 10 full-time members, of which four are representatives of the NEA, one each of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Nepal Telecom (NTC), and four members from the general shareholders. In the same way, representatives of Rastriya Beema Sansthan (RBS) and Citizen Investment Trust (CIT) are also invited members of the BoD of Upper Tamakoshi.
