Central Zoo is one of the largest & oldest zoos in Nepal. It is located in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur, Nepal. So, it is also called JAwalakhel Central Zoo. This was established in 1932 during the Rana Primeminister Juddha Samsher. It was established as a private zoo. This zoo came under government ownership after 1950s political changes. It is established to protect wildlife, the environment & ecosystem.
The Central Zoo has been under the management of the National Trust for Nature Conservation since 1995. This trust is growing this zoo as a centre for ex-situ wildlife research & conservation education. This zoo covers 6 hectares. Similarly, this zoo is home to 942 individual mammals, birds, fish & reptiles of 127 species. Moreover, it also serves as a recreational centre for visitors.
A major attraction of the Central Zoo is its boating facility in the pond located inside the zoo. Visitors, especially children, enjoy boating as part of their trip.
The zoo plays an important role in wildlife conservation and education. It also runs breeding programs for endangered species, such as the red panda and the gharial crocodile.
Over 1 million visitors visit the zoo annually. The revenue collected from visitors is the main source of income.
