History

Mental health services in Nepal were almost unknown until the early 1960s. In 1961, the very first psychiatric outpatient service was launched at Bir Hospital in Kathmandu by Dr. Bishnu Prasad Sharma, the nation’s first psychiatrist. Soon after, in 1965, a small in-patient unit with five beds was started at the same hospital and later expanded to 12 beds by 1971. These early steps paved the way for developing mental health care in the country. 

Later, a separate 12-bed psychiatry department was created at Bir Hospital in 1984 and then moved in 1985 to what is now known as the Mental Hospital Lagankhel in Lalitpur. Initially offering 25 beds, this facility was the country’s only dedicated mental hospital for many years.
