Ward No. 17, Kshetrapati

Kshetrapati is a small but lively neighbourhood in the heart of old Kathmandu, located very close to the famous tourist area of Thamel and not far from Basantapur. The area gets its name from the "Kshetrapati Temple", a local shrine dedicated to the deity Kshetrapati, who is believed to be the protector of the land. This temple sits right at the centre of the neighbourhood and has been a place of worship for the Newar community for hundreds of years - people come here daily to offer prayers, light incense, and seek blessings, especially during festivals. Historically, Kshetrapati was part of Kathmandu's old trading network, where local merchants and craftsmen ran their businesses along busy narrow lanes, and that same spirit of small trade and hard work is still very much alive today in the form of little shops, metal workshops, and family-run stores scattered across the area. Because it sits so close to Thamel, it also has small guesthouses, local eateries, and convenience shops that serve both residents and travellers. Politically, it falls under "Kathmandu Metropolitan City" and, like most of old Kathmandu, faces the challenge of balancing modern urban development with preserving its old buildings and cultural identity. But what truly defines Kshetrapati is its everyday life - the sound of temple bells in the morning, the smell of incense in the air, vendors selling vegetables on the roadside, and old Newari-style houses standing tall with their carved wooden windows. It is a simple, honest, and deeply traditional part of Kathmandu that has managed to hold onto its roots even as the city rapidly changes around it.
