Tarkeshwor Municipality is a local government in Kathmandu with a rich blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and deep-rooted religious traditions. It Located at an elevation of 1,345 meters and covering 35 square kilometers area. Formed on 16 November 2071 by the Government of Nepal, the Tarakeshwar Municipality brought together several villages, including Sangla, Kavresthali, Jitpurphedi, Goldhunga, Dharmasthali, Futung, and Manmaiju. It has 11 ward offices.
This is bordered by Tokha Municipality to the east, Nargajun Municipality to the west, Nuwakot District to the north, and Kathmandu Metropolitan City to the south. The name Tarakeshwar is steeped in mythology. According to the legend recounted in Swasthani Varta Katha, the divine Tarakeshwar Mahadev was born when Sati Devi’s body parts fell in this area, making it a revered Shaktipeeth. This myth has contributed to the municipality’s spiritual significance, with numerous temples- such as Sri Tarakeshwar Mahadev Temple, Old Guhyeshwari Temple, and Manmaiju Indrayani Temple- drawing both devotees and tourists.
Demographically, the area has experienced significant growth. The 2068 census recorded a population of 81,443, while a preliminary count from 2078 shows the population has grown to 151,479, with nearly equal numbers of males and females. The municipality boasts a high literacy rate of 87.8%, reflecting its strong emphasis on education.
