Narayan Hiti Palace is one of the historical places in Nepal. It is located in Kathmandu, Nepal. It has different significance in the history of Nepal. It was the palace of the former king of Nepal. The Shah dynasty's king had operated their rule over Nepal from Narayanhiti Palace. It was the home of Nepal's King. 

Narayanhiti Durbar is a palace in Kathmandu that long served as the residence and principal workplace of the reigning Monarch of the Kingdom of Nepal. It is a historical treasure of Nepal. In the past, it was the royal residence of the Shah Kings of Nepal. But it is now an open museum for everybody. 

Narayanhiti Palace served as the seat of the monarchy system of Nepal. It is the eyewitness of various political and non-political events in Nepal's history. Nepal has many historical heritages that reflect the country's arts, political system, monarchy system, and more. The gold State Coach, the royal crown, the Shree Sadan, Old Vehicles, etc., are the major attractions here. 

Historical Background

Narayanhiti Palace was built in 1963 AD and completed in 1969 AD. American architect Benjamin Polk designed the present structure of Narayanhiti Darbar, which combines traditional Nepalese arts with modern design. 

The royal residence of Shah Kings shifted from Hanumandhoka to Narayanhiti during the time of Prithvi Bir Bikram Shah. Since the other Shah king continued to reside here. This palace was also the eyewitness of the royal massacre in 2001 AD.

This palace became the museum when Nepal established the Republic's political system. It was converted into a public museum on 15 June 2008.

Narayanhiti Palace Museum is open six days a week. Here is the timetable:

Note: The museum will be closed during public holidays.

Entrance Fees

Narayanhiti Palace Museum charges certain ticket prices on the following basis:  

Nepali Students Rs. 50
Nepali Citizens Rs. 200
SAARC & Chinese Nationals Rs. 500
All other Foreigners Rs. 1000

Note: Entrance is Free for children under the age of 9 & Senior Citizens.

Things to consider

  • Usually open from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM, except on Wednesdays and public holidays.
  • You can not take a picture in the palace. There is no allowed to carry mobile, camera, & other devices.
